The Lab — Free Skills App

  • I built a self-paced daily workout app for our players — about 25 minutes a day of guided ball handling, finishing, shooting, footwork, and defense.
  • Starts with the fundamentals we’ve been teaching and builds into intermediate and more advanced drills, each with a guided video.
  • Sign up at thelab.gametriq.com or tap the The Lab tab above.
  • Team code: JP2 — then pick a name and a 4-digit PIN and start climbing the team leaderboard.
  • 100% free, and another way for your player to get better on their own.

Schedule

Open gym and player workouts continue all July — Monday & Wednesday, 4:30–6:00 PM at the JP2 gym, open to every player. See the Notes section above for AZ Flight summer club ball and The Lab skills app.

Athletic Mission

The mission of the Athletic Department at St. John Paul II Catholic High School is to provide a Christ-Centered approach in all of our athletic teams, forming champions for Christ on and off the field of competition.

Student athletes grow in physical skills, in fitness and health, in virtues, and in thanks to God for their bodily abilities. The discipline of working hard under difficult conditions affirms the values of courage, effort, sacrifice and hope, as athletes learn lessons from failure and success. John Paul II Lions will earn a reputation for good sportsmanship and teamwork. Positive competition can foster the values of humility, patience and concern for others, the strongest possible foundation for winning teams.

St. John Paul II Catholic High School Athletic Department

Three Pillars

Everything we do, every drill, every game, every conversation, is grounded in these three pillars. They are the standard by which we measure ourselves as players and as men.

I

Form the Person Before You Coach the Player

Basketball is the vehicle. Character is the destination. Every drill, every film session, every timeout is a teaching moment about who our players are becoming, not just what they produce on the court.

  • Compete with integrity; how you lose matters as much as how you win
  • Effort is non-negotiable; talent is a gift, but work ethic is a choice
  • Every player leaves this program better than they arrived
II

Build a Culture of Trust, Truth & Collective Ownership

A team is not a roster, it is a covenant. We build it through radical honesty, genuine relationships, and a culture where players hold each other accountable because they own the program together.

  • Truth-telling is an act of respect; players get honest feedback, not comfortable vagueness
  • Trust is built in practice, spent in games
  • The team's identity is bigger than any individual's stats or minutes
III

Master Fundamentals. Execute the System. Adapt Without Compromise.

Excellence has a process. We build a system for practice, for decision-making, for handling adversity, and we execute it relentlessly. But great coaches adapt that system to their people without abandoning their principles.

  • Fundamentals are never optional; spacing, defense, and decision-making are taught daily
  • The system serves the players; when it stops serving them, we adapt it
  • Consistency in preparation is the only path to confidence in competition

The Standard

Being a JP2 Lion is a privilege, not a right. We expect commitment from every player and their family. Here is what that looks like.

  • 📚

    Academics First

Maintain GPA requirements. No exceptions. Coaches monitor grades and partner with teachers to keep you eligible and on track. The classroom comes before the court.

  • Attendance & Punctuality

Be on time and be present. Missed practices and unexcused absences affect the entire team. Effort is non-negotiable.

  • 💪

    Year-Round Commitment

The season is won in the off-season. Summer workouts, open gyms, and conditioning are expected. Consistency in preparation creates confidence in competition.

  • 🏛

    Character & Integrity

Represent JP2 with class. On campus, online, and in the community, you carry the name. Athletics at this school are an expression of its mission.

  • 👪

    Family Involvement

We are building a program, not just a team. Parent support, communication, and engagement are part of the covenant.
